Spring and summer 2024 style trends are officially on our radar with the temperature rising and the days becoming progressively longer (thanks, daylight savings!).
Sunnier days are finally, officially, blessedly here—and while some of us are busy brainstorming holiday destination options for summer, others are already setting their sights on the sizzling trends making waves on our feeds. We’re swapping out our heavy coats for lighter jackets and looking forward to wearing the new season catwalk trends from now through to summer. The good news is that you probably already own most of spring’s key elements, and that clever styling – a splash of red here, a crisp white shirt there – will serve as easy updates.
This spring/summer season is bringing a whole lot of nostalgia- from the nostalgic revival of early-2010s fashion to quiet luxury, ballet flats to micro-est of miniskirts. And experts say this year’s defining spring and summer trends, like the return of ’90s-style minimalism, boho style, and a resurgence of cowboy-inspired pieces, follow the same arc—but with a little more playfulness this time around.
So what are we all going to be wearing the minute we can shed these coats? Here are the key fashion trends to know about for the new season…
This post is the latest from the Style Edit where I curate some of my favorite outfits and nail inspo. There’s truly something for everyone. If you’re new here, The Style Edit is where I talk about the next biggest fashion trends seen around the web. Make sure to subscribe for more style tips!
1. ’90s Nostalgia
The Succession-fueled “quiet luxury” trend is seamlessly transitioning into an era that pays homage to the understated glamour of the ’90s, where everyday items are elevated to exceptional levels of design and style without compromising on comfort. Think modern renditions of animal print skirts that channel the iconic ’90s vibe, subtly drapey yet utterly captivating.

2. Elevated Everyday
Statement gowns are out and discreet chic – buoyed up with wardrobe staples including leather jackets, pencil skirts, linen shirts, and good jeans – is in. There’s no better time to invest in the summer blazer in white or cream, and the pièce de résistance: a cherry red accent piece. Invest in a summer blazer in white or cream, and add the pièce de résistance: an eye-catching cherry red accent piece. Leather, an eternal icon, takes center stage this season, reimagined into a-line skirts, draped shirts, and flared pants for an understated yet striking look.

3. Boho 3.0
Welcome back to the zeitgeist, boho! While the word boho might send you on a stress-induced mental trip back to the early 2000s, fear not: The aesthetic has been remixed for 2024, with new interpretations on crochet, suade, and flowy white skirts that exude a coolness never experienced before.

4. Athletic Prep (aka elevated sportswear)
Don’t toss those Adidas Sambas from last summer just yet. One of our favorite 2024 fashion trends for spring and summer is the continuation of the elevated sportswear trend. I’m in no way athletically inclined (something my P.E. teacher will still back up to this day), but now I can finally feel part of the team as prep-school sportswear like polo shirts, sporting stripes, track jackets, and button-down shirts walked down the runway this season with a new attitude. Comfort dressing? You don’t have to tell us twice.

5. Cherry Red Details
Wave goodbye to Barbie pink; the hottest color of 2024. Embrace the boldness of red from head to toe or add a surprising pop with statement accessories like bags or shoes. Two red colors in particular have been making a splash; namely a beautiful, rich cherry red as well as an in-your-face bold red that really standout. Balletcore is also big this season, so embrace the trend with cute red ballet flats so you can be comfortable without compromising on style.

6. Don’t be afraid of a little transparency
The most predominant style on the runway was the one that almost wasn’t there at all. Call me controversial, but if you’re going to wear a skirt in 2024, make sure it’s see-through. In summer, do it with baby tees and ballet flats, and on cooler, transitional days, opt for knee-high boots, a cosy cashmere knit and perhaps tights. Whether you choose to reveal or conceal, ensure your panties are as stylish as the rest of your ensemble.

7. Polo club
Stealth wealth is still going strong, but it’s poised to change a little in the new year. Prepare to see a lot more of the humble collared cotton style, which was styled with everything from sequined skirts to mom jeans. The key to making it feel effortless? Just remember to muss up your hair.

8. Cowboy
Call it the Cowboy Carter effect: Fashion is taking a big trip out West this season, and we’re following. Pretty prairie gets a taste for the Wild West this season with suede, crochet and raffia all playing a big part. Wear cowboy boots or mules with frilly and floral dresses and make the suede jacket your cover-up of choice – cowboy hat optional.

9. Shorts, No Really
While we expect shorts to grow dramatically longer by the end of the year, one thing is clear: They’re very, very short right now. As summer heats up, micro shorts, bordering on knickers, are undeniably having their moment, stealing the spotlight since their runway debut.
