Let the Planning Begin – Italy Itinerary
Best Time to Visit Italy?
First of all, the best time to visit Italy is April – May and September – October. This is the shoulder season when the climate is milder. But, if swimming is a must during your holiday, September and October is when the water’s warm and a time that still lets you enjoy the summer vibes.
Booking Flights
Next comes booking your flight. My trip to Italy, and Rome specifically, was so easy with Klook. The added bonus were the reasonable prices on plane tickets. The key here is to book early so your preferred seat choices are available and prices are at their lowest. Ensuring a smooth and stress-free vacation to your desired destination is best done if you book and plan ahead of time.
Spending Time in Rome
Ah, the Eternal City. This city requires no introduction; we’ve all consumed so much content about the lure of this place. Called the retired capital of the Roman Empire and the present capital of Italy, Rome’s architecture is a mixture of old and new. But as you stroll through the stradas and vias, here’s what not to skip: check out the street sellers for indelible mementos. And don’t forget to look up: We tend to keep our focus at eye level, missing the grandeur of the buildings and the forest for the trees. The more I am here, the deeper I realize how much experience is truly sensual, meant to be enjoyed through our senses.
How to Get to Rome
If flying in, be mindful to land in the right airport since Rome has two. The main international airport in Rome is Fiumicino (FCO). Then you can book your rentals or hop on a train according to your preference.
- Take the train: Follow the symbols in the terminal to the on-site train station. From FCO, you can go to the Leonardo Express train and head towards the Roma Termini train depot. Departing every 15 minutes, the train takes about 30 minutes to reach the destination. And it wouldn’t be Italy without pickpockets, so be vigilant when it comes to your belongings and keep them within eyesight.
- Take a taxi: Taxi rates are fixed. Just ensure that you are taking a taxi from the official pickup point. It will also take the same time (30 minutes) to reach your destination.
- Take a bus: You can take the bus as well from Roma Termini train station. When you are taking the bus, it will take approx. 45 minutes to get you there.
Booking Accommodation in Rome
If you are looking for the best hotels and lodging in Rome then you must check Klook. Here you can find your ideal lodging. Just make sure you book accommodations in the city center so that you are centrally located and closer to all sites.
Whether you reserve an apartment, a single room, or a whole house, your booking is secure since hôteliers and all listings must pass a verification procedure. Also, ensure that the hotels are providing you with all the basic and/or desired amenities so that you can have a comfortable stay.
Get Ready to Book Your Tours
When in Rome, there’s no limit as to the kind of activities available. So planning is key! Whether you sort through these according to preference or popularity, just make sure you PLAN so you don’t miss a thing.
If confused or in need of help, here is my 4-day Rome itinerary.
Rome Itinerary
Day 1
Awake and bushy-tailed, let’s go!
- Scalina Spagna: Ah, the Spanish Steps! This stunning staircase gets packed at night since it’s the most famous hangout spot.
- Trevi Fountain: This is one of Rome’s biggest and most famous fountains and also one of the city’s biggest draw. As such, be prepared for crowds and patience for that perfect selfie.
Day 2
- Pantheon: Built in 120 AD and known as the temple of all gods, this temple is called Pantheon, or translated in Greek as “Honor all Gods”. You can buy tickets in advance so that you don’t need to wait in long queues.
- Piazza Navona: This place is known for its beautiful view! There you can find cafes lining the edges of the piazza, which includes two beautiful fountains and a church.
Day 3
- Roman Forum: These are the ruins of the original government buildings of ancient Roman. Traipse around the site, imagining how it looked 200 years ago — and, perhaps how you might have looked in a toga!.
- Via dei Fori Imeriali: This is one of my favorite streets to explore in Rome, particularly at dusk. On one side, you can see the Roman Forum and on the other one, you can witness the incredible ruins.
- Vittoriano: This big, marble building doesn’t fit in the ancient surroundings, but I adore coming back to this place.
Day 4
- Castel Sant’Angelo: This is again a great place to roam around. If you want you can enter the museum but the castle looks great with the riverside view.
- Wander: Just explore. Get lost in the city. There are so many things to see. Don’t just limit yourself to this destination. Dig out the hidden locations where you can sit and enjoy your favorite meals.
This is the destination I fell in love with — and Italy, on the whole, of course! There are so many things to explore and dig out. Well, let me share some exciting things that you just can’t miss on the first tour.
- Sample cup after cup of gelato. And an afogato, if you like espresso!
- Enjoy a pasta or pizza-making class
- Zip through Rome on a Vespa tour à la Lizzie McGuire.
- Don’t forget to see the ruins like the Pantheon and the Colosseum
